My turtle's scute came off. Is my treatment for the injury correct?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

We have a turtle who had a scute snagged off prematurely. There was a bit of bleeding and a small section of white tissue beneath exposed. We rinse the wound with purified water each night, apply antibiotic ointment and gauze with paper tape. The bandage stays on overnight but we take it off during day. He gets a 2 hour soak each day in shallow water. And then basks under his light. There is no swelling or redness and the new scute does appear to be growing. Are we treating this correctly?

Since the new scute is starting to grow and since the wound is healing well you are doing everything right. As long as there is no infection reddening, pus visible, your turtle should be fine. You may not have to rinse the wound anymore provided there is no discharge and as long as it is healing. Keep up the good work.
