Shaved dog has smooth skin markings. Is it an infection? How to treat?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 2 years and 5 months old | 36 lbs

After shaving bruce (2 year old labrador), I found these markings on his skin. It doesnt seem to be scabbing of any sort because its smooth and seems like part of the skin itself. These markings are located only on his top sides, not on his back, stomach or legs. I'm worried because I don't remember this happening to him before. Could you please let me know what it is and how I can treat it.

Hello. We will often see some subtle indications of a bacterial infection under the hair, especially after long or thick hair has been shaved off. You can bathe Bruce in any OTC antibacterial shampoo ( either with benzyl peroxide or chlorhexidine ) twice a week for 2-3 weeks & this should take care of the problem. Oral antibiotics are very rarely needed. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
