Why is my dog licking lips, coughing, lethargic, and can't swallow?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 1 year old | 10 lbs

My dog seems like he has cotton mouth or something that is making him constantly lick his lips & try to swallow but seems like he can’t. He has coughed a little like maybe 3 times but he is very lethargic.. what is going on?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Taz. He. could have an upper respiratory tract infection causing the symptoms you are describing. This is common in young dogs especially if they play with other dogs. Of course, he could have something stuck in his throat or mouth. Was he chewing on anything prior to his symptoms starting? Either way, he should see his veterinarian. I hope this information helps!

It is definitely possible that Tug had something stuck in his mouth - some food, a stick, some grass or a bone are common things I have found in dogs mouths, so it is worthwhile having a really good look in his mouth and teeth. Another potential reason is that he may have nausea - feeling sick. This can cause dogs lick and swallow more than normal. If this behavior continues, you should take him in to the vet. they may suggest some blood tests for causes of nausea or even an xray if it is suspicous that he has something stuck.
