My dog takes Apoquel. How can I safely stop or reduce his dose?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd | Male | neutered | 7 years and 3 months old | 32 lbs

I've read so many bad things about Apoquel and would like to take my dog off of it. When my vet first put him on it he said my dog would need to take it for the rest of his life. Can I wean him off of it by giving him smaller and smaller doses of it each week?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Tate. While Apoquel is still a somewhat new drug, it is very safe in my experience. It seems to have many less side effects when compared to steroids. If you are still wanting to stop, you do not need to taper him down. The drug can be given as needed for itching. You could consider Cytopoint instead. This is an injectable allergy medication that controls itching for 4-8 weeks. I hope this information helps!
