Why did my 14-year-old Labrador die with a growth and swollen nipple?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | unspayed | 14 years and 5 months old | 60 lbs

I just lost my 14yr old female Labrador & did not opt for an autopsy. Still, I wonder why she passed, exactly. In 2014, she developed a soft growth about the size of a tennis ball on her left side. 2 wks ago I noticed a solid line just under her skin that ran from her groin to under her ribs and a nipple that it ran under was swollen, infected and bled. In 1wk, she lost her ability to stand, but still ate, drank, & pottied. Then she just passed away. Thoughts?

Hello. I am very sorry for your loss. Angel was quite old for a Lab., but your description of a solid line in her groin makes me wonder if this was a lymph node. I have seen them get this large & it is always an indication of a cancer called lymphoma. Often there are other lymph nodes that enlarge, especially the ones under the neck, but I have also seen where the inguinal lymph node gets extremely large first. This is a guess, but it is something that I have seen several times. Please accept my condolences for your loss & thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
