Senior dog's support harness caused skin wound. What else can I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 14 years and 1 month old | 60 lbs

my 14 year old dogbeen wearing a harness to help his hind legs, as they are weak and he can't go up and down the stairs, or get up. Anyway, yesterday I noticed on his abdomen, the skin was irritated, obviously from the harness, and there was an area where the skin looked like it 'split' open. I immediately removed the harness, washed it and put Neosporin on the wound. It looked much better this morning, but I had cleaned it, and put more antibiotic ointment. is there anything else I can do?

Hello. It sounds like you are doing a great job with Rupert. Just keep the area clean & treated & it should heal just fine. If you need to put the harness back on, make sure you do not leave it on for extended periods. If you can, I would try to pad the area that caused the skin irritation. You might need to get a little inventive, but using a piece of sheepskin ( available at any fabric shop ) or some moleskin ( find in a pharmacy ) should decrease friction & rubbing on the area. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
