Should I put food and water in my 8-week-old puppy's crate overnight?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Cockapoo | Male | unneutered | 2 months old | 4 lbs

My puppy is 8 weeks old and we are starting to leave him alone at night now downstairs. He sleeps in his crate but we leave the door open as we leave his food and water outside the crate. I am wondering if we should close the crate door and put his food in there. should his food and water be in his crate?

I'm going to give you a link with details on how to crate train a puppy, but I do not recommend leaving food and water in his crate overnight. This will make him have to go out to the bathroom more overnight, and since you will have to get up twice to take Cooper to potty every 2.5 to 3 hours, you don't want to have to deal with additional times to take him out or messes to clean up. If he's sleeping fine in the crate, you can start closing the door. Check out this link below for more information, and I hope this helps! https://www.labradortraininghq.com/labrador-training/how-to-crate-train-a-puppy/
