Parrot losing stomach feathers in summer. Is it molting or heat?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Unknown - Bird | Male

Since the past month our parrot (Alexandrian parakeet) the feathers around his stomach area are becoming scarce, other than this apparent shedding of feathers there is NO other visible symptom or change in his behaviour and appetite. We live in Rajasthan, India which is an area with tropical heat conditions and we are heading towards harsh summers now, (with temperatures of the order of 40°C+) could it have anything to do with his present condition? Kindly, help us with your expert advice.

This actually looks like normal molting and not a condition causing feather loss. I would be worried about lice, mites, skin disease, or feather plucking if there were bald areas, but the under feathers are still there. The fact that there are still some feathers covering the skin indicates that a primary problem affecting the feathers is not present. I expect that his feathers will look more normal after one more month if of this is due to molting. If he happens to get bald areas, or is not looking better after a month, then it would be best to have a vet examine him for the problems mentioned above. I hope that helps and all is well with Maggi. I also wish you luck in getting through that brutal summer. I've suffered through one summer there and was happy when monsoon season finally came.
