My dog is licking and scooting. Can I use Neosporin or hydrocortisone?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Cavalier King Charles Spaniel | Female | 7 years and 5 months old | 35 lbs

was wondering I think my dog has vaginitis because she’s contastantly licking herself and when I touch and inspect her vaginal area she runs away like it’s iritating her. Plus she licks it NON stop. I was wondering if neosporin or hydrocortisone is or for temporary relief until I can take her to the vet. She also can’t sit down and has to stand because right when she sits, she gets back up again and then scoots.

This may be a vaginitis, or bacterial infection of the folds around the vagina, as it apparently itches, if she is scooting. She could also have an anal gland problem, which would also explain the scooting, especially if she cannot reach her anus and just licks her vagina instead. Condition is uncomfortable at best, if not painful. You should schedule a vet appointment ASAP, as any of the OTC ointments should not be used without a proper diagnosis. They likely will not work, if this is infection.
