How to comfort my old dog who is not eating and losing mobility?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 50 lbs

My 16 yr old dog has lost his will to live. He not eating now and barely drinks anything. He lost the use of hi back legs, I take him out with a wagon and hold him up to use the bathroom. I know I should have him put to sleep but can’t afford the fees. Is there anything I can do to make him more comfortable until he passes?

Hi there and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I'm sorry to hear Hobbs is not doing very well. If he is laying in one position frequently, I would recommended turning him and shifting his position every 6 hours or more even more frequently to help prevent pressure sores. You can also try diffusing lavender oil with a diffuser or humidifier in the area where he resides the most to help keep stress levels down. Other ways to keep him comfortable, such as pain medications, or appetite stimulants will need to be prescribed by Hobb's veterinarian. Best wishes to you and Hobbs!
