My rescued Chihuahua trembles. Will he ever adjust to our family?

I four year old Chihuahua who has spent his life mostly in a cage in a kennel. Every time we pick him up he starts trembling.. we then put him back in his cushion bed..and just lay there. Will get ever get a s custom to me and my family..or you can't teach a old dog new tricks.

It will likely take a long time but with patience and gentleness the dog should eventually come around. At the moment it is still unsure and scared. Don't pressure the dog and gradually it should improve.
