Can a companion dog help my dog's separation anxiety and chewing?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

So I had a 3 year old dog that had separation anxiety and he wouldn’t even chew any bones and stuff alone only A Kong. We got him a puppy and now he will chew the chews we leave for him. Is that a sign he needed a friend? He is up to almost 4 hours within a month or so or would that of happened even if we didn’t of gotten another dog?

It's hard to say. Some dogs with separation anxiety do better with another dog in the house, while this doesn't make any difference at all for others. So it's possible that getting the puppy was helpful, but it's also possible that this was coincidental and he may have improved anyway due to the other things you were doing. Regardless, I'm glad he's doing better :)
