Why is my cat's belly rumbling with soft poop after new food?

I recently started slowly transitioning my kitty to another wet food . couple times after she ate I heard a rumble from her belly and then she did a gagging type thing (once). I never heard this rumble before and not sure if it started happening when I started the transition but it all so happened to be around the same time . No vomiting & her stools have been a lil on the soft side. . Before the transition her stools would sometimes be well formed and sometimes Soft. Should I be concernEd? TY!

You've done exactly the right thing by slowly transitioning Kitty to a new wet food, and I'm not sure exactly how slowly you are doing it. It sounds like from the rumbling of her tummy to the softer stools that you may need to make the transition a little bit slower. Go back to the previous old food/new food combination and continue that for about a week before increasing the amount of new food. If she still continues to have problems, then it may be simply her body isn't agreeing with the new food, and I'd either put her back on her old food only or find a different brand of new food. Cats, unlike dogs can eat only meat and be fine, as they are obligate carnivores. Dogs can actually be fed a vegetarian diet but cats cannot. If she was doing well on the previous food then transition her back if you want, or you can give her a little more time to get used to the new diet. Since she's eating fine I don't think you need to rush her to the vet just yet, as long as she seems well otherwise. Then put 75% old food/25% new food in the bowl together for a few days. Then go to 50%/50%, then 25%/75%, taking a few days each time. You can switch their food but you want to slowly transition them to the new food. This means you want to start with mixing only a small amount of the new food in with the old food for a few days then over a 10 day period, increase the amount of new food while decreasing the amount of old food until you are just feeding the new food around day 10. By slowly transitioning them to a new food, it decreases the risk of causes an upset stomach. I hope this helps!

Her stool in the 2nd and 3rd pictures still look a little soft, so I would give it another couple of days on the 25%/75% mixture before going to 50/50. If when you do make that switch to 50/50 and she starts having diarrhea again, then I would say that this food isn't agreeing with her and keep her on her old food instead. I say that because if you've tried the 50/50 mixture, got diarrhea, went back a step for a bit before returning to 50/50 and still get the same result, then it's not a food that agrees with Kitty. Congrats on the new family member. I would agree with you that the new food could have caused some indigestion. Typically, if you decide to switch any animal's diet, the best method of doing this is a gradual switch over at least a week's time. Mix in the original food with the new food and little by little transition completely over. You can try to do this as of now. If the soft stool continues or if there is any more blood, I would pull food completely for 12-24 hours. After this, provide a very bland diet like boiled boneless chicken or boiled hamburger, as well as rice. Do this or 2-4 days until the bowel movements seem to be regular once again. Another cause of bleeding in the feces, especially in very young animals, are intestinal parasites. If Love Bug hasn't been dewormed yet, I would speak with your vet about having her feces looked at under a microscope and checked out. She may require a short series of dewormer. Hopefully you and Love Bug will figure things out. L

This could definitely be because of the change of food but the black color concerns me that there may be digested blood present. Since she is so young and tiny, I would consider this urgent so I would try to get her into the vet soon. I would that she may become dehydrated or sicker if it isn't addressed. Your vet will likely want to run a fecal on her to check for any intestinal parasites. They may also want to know the food you are feeding her. I hope this helps and she starts to feel better soon.

It is possible that the transition to the new food caused the diarrhea in Toothless. An abrupt transition back to the old food may not result in the diarrhea improving. It is always important to do a slow transition to a new diet, gradually mixing in more of the new food and less of the old food over the course of a week. This will help decrease the incidence of diarrhea in many cases. You may need to feed a bland diet (such as plain boiled chicken and rice) for a few days to allow the gastrointestinal tract to rest, and then slowly transition back to her original diet. If the diarrhea worsens (develops heavy mucus or blood), Toothless becomes lethargic or inappetant, then she should be seen by her veterinarian to rule-out internal parasites or an infectious cause.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Skye. She may not be tolerating her new diet well and experiencing diarrhea as a result. If the diarrhea continues into tomorrow, she will need to see her veterinarian. Being so young, it is easy for her to become dehydrated. Of course, there are other causes of diarrhea that could have appeared at the same time as the diet change. Her veterinarian may perform fecal testing and will likey prescribe a medication. In the meantime, encourage her to drink plenty of water. I hope this information helps!

I would suggest to withhold food for the next 8-12 hours and then start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. It will take a while for them to settle and soft feces can be quite normal the first 2 weeks. There is no reason why you would give more moist food, so it is good if they get both. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice vomiting, lethargy or inappetence. Hi and thanks for posting on Boop by Petco! Sometimes changes in stool production can occur when the type or kind of food is changed. You may try introducing the food the original owner had her on to see if that helps. Otherwise, you can try a little plain canned pumpkin in her food (not the pie filing) for an added fiber boost that can help move things along. If that doesn't seem to help, I would have her seen by a veterinarian as there may be other issues such as a parasitic infection that may be a contributing cause. I hope this helps!

A sudden change in diet can lead to GI upset in the form of diarrhea, which Abby may have. I can give you a home remedy for her to see if that helps. Withhold food for 6 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, she starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. Best of luck.
