Dog delivered a dead puppy late. Is my mother dog healthy after birth?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 2 years old | 45 lbs

My Labradoodle had puppies yesterday. She is 2 and had 6. She seemed to be fine, a great mom! Staying with the puppies and feeding them! She didn't seem to still be in labor. She was fine all night! She was panting more this morning, but I just assumed it was from feeding and being hot. She was fine at lunch. I came home tonight and there was a 7th puppy and he was dead. His head was so smushed I am not sureit was developed. I just want to know if she is okay& if it was late because it was dead?

It isn't unusual for a dead puppy to be born long after a healthy litter is born. It is likely that the puppy was stuck in the birth canal and took longer to deliver and died while being stuck, or it could have been dead in utero and was later expelled with the last placenta. Usually there is no problem with the mother provided she eats, drinks and takes care of her puppies. If she gets lethargic, or if she has smelly discharge from the vulva (greenish non-smelly discharge is normal) then she should be seen by a vet .
