How to stop my possessive chihuahua from attacking new puppy?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | neutered | 7 years and 7 months old | 5 lbs

Have a 8 y/o chi who is very possessive of me (mom) but also just got a pit puppy. The chi tries to attack the puppy if he comes near me when I am on the couch. Will he eventually get use to the new dog and stop trying to attack him? Is there anything I should or shouldn't be doing?

A gradual introduction would be recommended. Separate them for a few days, then begin anew. Jackson may eventually become acclimated and accepting of the new dog, but it could take time. Consider a pheromone product, such as the Adaptil collar or DAP diffuser, to decrease any anxiety or aggression. Correct any aggressive behavior immediately and praise and reward good behavior.
