How to make my allergic dog's homemade chicken & rice diet complete?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 11 months old | 11 lbs

Chicken & rice (w. The occasional scrambled Egg) diet nutritionally sound? Or should i be adding something? He gets bologna as treats (mostly for training) and i have normal dog chews(not rawhide) that keep him happy.. But i wonder if im giving him enough nutritional value sometimes. He's had allergic reactions to dog foods in the past So I've been trying to cook for him. Any recipe ideas? Or should i get him multivitamins?

Home prepared diets can be very difficult to balance long term and I strongly recommend a consult with a specialist nutritionist such as through tuft clinical nutrition unit in order to ensure he is receiving all of the trace elements, vitamins, minerals and energy he requires. In food sensitivities, a hydrolyzed diet such as royal canin hypoallergenic can be very effective also. Chicken and rice is a very bland and effective diet in the short to medium term but would need supplemental feeding in the long term
