My dog's stool still positive for coronavirus. How to proceed?

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 8 months old | 72 lbs

Hi my dog stool sample still shows she has coronavirus and it has almost been a year since the first positive stool sample how can i get a rid of coronavirus thanks

Kia may be a carrier. It is possible for a dog to be infected with Coronavirus and not show any symptoms. As long as she is behaving normally and is otherwise healthy, you may need to accept that she is a carrier. Clean up any stool immediately and disinfect the area. You can use diluted household bleach.

    There is no specific coronavirus treatment which will eliminate this and some dogs can become long term carriers. If you feel they are unwell as a result then investigated any reason for lowered immunity would be worth discussing with your vet and immune stimulators may help. Natural tonics such as turmeric and black pepper have shown some positive results in recovery from viral infections also

    Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. If Kia had Coronavirus, it can remain present in her stool for up to 6 months. If it has not been over 6 months, I would hold off on any vaccinations and wait until the 6 month period to retest the stool and reconsider boostering the vaccinations. Every veterinarian is going to have different requirements so I would just speak with your veterinarian on the phone and confirm that this is what he / she would like to do as well. You have several options- abortion, having her spayed or carry on with the pregnancy and take the risk, even if her stool sample tested positive for corona it does not mean the puppies will suffer from it automatically.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Cleo. Dogs can acquire a canine form of the coronavirus. It is generally a mild infection that causes vomiting and diarrhea. Most of the time treatment is not needed. This has been a long standing viral infection and is not new. The virus affecting humans in the news is an emerging strain of the virus. At this point, there is no evidence of spread of this form of the virus to dogs. I hope this information helps!

My cat had diarrhea about 2 weeks ago.Her appetite/energy was normal and she only had fever the day before she started antibiotics. Vet said she has intestinal parasites, gave her medicine for 3 days. Her poop got better but her right eye got cloudy.
Many cats have Coronavirus. Once Coronavirus mutates into FIP (Feline infectious peritonitis) it is fatal and doesn't resolve. You can have a positive Coronavirus but that does not mean Mia has FIP. I have also seen a negative Coronavirus test and a cat end up with FIP. The only was to diagnose FIP is on necropsy. If Mia is positive for Coronavirus, yes it can mutate under stressful situations at any point. There are two different types of FIP. There is a dry form and a wet form. The dry form is difficult to diagnose since it typically presents as a high fever and a cat losing weight and not doing well. The wet form is easier to determine since they present with fluid in their abdomen and usually with liver disease. They also are icteric (have a yellow appearance to them). Cats infected with a feline coronavirus generally do not show any symptoms during the initial viral infection, and an immune response occurs with the development of antiviral antibodies. In a small percent of infected cats (5 to 10 percent), either by a mutation of the virus or by an aberration of the immune response, the infection progresses into clinical FIP. Cats can become persistently infected and continuously or intermittently shed virus with the feces. One of the most difficult aspects of FIP is that there is no simple diagnostic test. The ELISA, IFA, and virus-neutralization tests detect the presence of coronavirus antibodies in a cat, but these tests cannot differentiate between the various strains of feline coronavirus. A positive result means only that the cat has had a prior exposure to coronavirus, but not necessarily one that causes FIP.

It could be but it is going to be difficult to prove it. It is most likely viral with a secondary bacterial infection. A check up would be required as antibiotics may be appropriate option. Unlikely to be coronavirus at that age, but Giardia is possible. Coccidiosis, campylobacter, salmonella and norovirus are other possible causes. Either way, it appears that this may be contagious, so it would be best to bring a poo sample into the vet and have it checked; especially since many of these bugs can be transmitted to people as well. They can also prescribe the appropriate medication if needed. I hope that helps and they get better soon.

Hello :) Can you, please, help me with interpretation of my cat's medical blood results and diseases tests? I have some doubts about the prognosis and what my vet told me, based on this results - that my cat has corona virus, untreatable condition. .
Good question. This is a complex disease that most cats are exposed to. Most cats that are just exposed but don't end up sick with the disease are going to come up positive for antibodies against the virus. However, a pet is only confirmed to have this disease if they have positive Antigens. Therefore, since your pet Sonia had a positive antibody and negative antigen, this means she was exposed to the virus, but has not developed the full blown disease. With this said, cats can at any point do what is called seroconvert to the active strain of the virus and become sick since they are carriers of the gene. If your pet becomes sick in the future, rechecking the antigen levels is highly recommended. Because your pet is a carrier for Coronovirus (FCoV), loose stool may be seen, but nothing more severe than that. Don't panic! Some dogs are carriers for life, and this certainly does not mean you cannot socialize your dog or allow her to have a normal life. Some dogs, like people, seem to have Giardia and periodically shed and it causes them no problems whatsoever. Yes, it is possible that eventually she will stop shedding, but we don't know this for certain.

Once your pet treats tests negative for oocytes (eggs) then that means she isn't shedding anymore Giardia around. Older dogs are less likely to get Giardia because of their developed immune system, which is why we often only see infection in puppies. Puppies are not lifelong carriers but some puppies can become carriers for an extended period of time, and in these cases they will continually test positive, but will be asymptomatic (no diarrhea). To help prevent spread to your other pet, I would recommend picking up the feces and cleaning up any accidents in the home with diluted bleach. But as mentioned earlier it is often predominantly an issue in puppies and immune compromised pets only. Take care of those fur babies and I hope Pepper gets over her infection soon!
