How long does it take for an anemic puppy to show color improvement?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Cavalier King Charles Spaniel | Female | unspayed | 1 month and 26 days old | 2.2 lbs

8 week old puppy had HCT of 19%, had been dewormed few days earlier, started giving liquid iron and fortiflora, puppy is energetic, eating great, running around. However I haven’t seen much improvement in color. How long does it take for color to improve? I know I need to get tests done to distinguish between regenerative vs non regenerative, fecal float and smear were all negative. Did an additional drontal plus to see if anything was remaining. Just wondering when I should see an improvement

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Olive! It takes the bone marrow 3-5 days to respond to anemia before it starts producing and releasing new red blood cells. If the anemia is regenerative then I would assume the HCT would start to slowly rise. I would expect the HCT to start to improve in 5-7 days. I would have her PCV/TS or HCT rechecked in a week. I hope this helps!
