My dog has a bald patch on his leg. Is it demodex after a snake bite?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Fox Terrier | Male | neutered | 1 year and 3 months old

My miniature foxie has a small bald patch on his leg, I can't think of what is causing it, surely his mouth would be too big to chew of that little fur. He is neutered and just over a year. He had all his injections and is regularly treated for fleas and ticks. I thought it was best to get another opinion and possible diagnosis. His leg is shaved cause a couple weeks back he had to receive antivenom (spot caused by the IV site?) as he was bitten by a red belly black snake. Thanks for the help.

That small round spot is suspicious for something called demodex mite. It is diagnosed with a skin scrape and found under the microscope. It often shows up on young dogs or after a stressful event (surely the snake bite would count). Most of the time the immune system kicks in and gets rid of the lesion, but occasionally it gets bigger or there are more spots showing up. Those cases usually need treatment. Best of luck and I hope he improves soon. Thank you for using Pet Coach.
