Dog's nose bleeds on antibiotics for plant debris. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | neutered | 11 years and 9 months old | 85 lbs

Hello. A few months back a weed came out of my dogs nose, then he got an infection. The vet put him on 2000 mgs of cephalexin a day. After beginning that his nose started bleeding. Took him back to the vet and they said they think it's a tumor and told me to keep him on the antibiotics permanently. I stopped giving it to him and the bleeding stopped then more plant debris came out. He has another infection now and the antibiotics are causing nose bleeds again. What should I do

I think you need to get a second opinion from another vet, preferably one who has a rhinoscope and can actually look into your dog's upper respiratory passages. By examining the nasal passages with a rhinoscope one will be able to see whether there is a tumor present or more plant debris or foreign material that may need to be removed and so stop the constant infections and bleeding. Your vet may be able to refer you to a relevant clinic.
