Why does my purebred Yorkie have an undercoat if they shouldn't?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Female | spayed | 1 year and 5 months old | 5.5 lbs

Yorkies are only suppose to have one coat but my dog seems to have an undercoat. She’s purebred. Its not a big deal but i’m just kind of confused.

That can be normal for some Yorkies and other terriers like my cairn terrier. They often have a coarser haired outer layer and a softer undercoat. Dogs that are clipped down completely can lose the coarse outer layer. I’m sure this is just a variation and that you have a purebred Yorkie. She may have more undercoat also if you live in a colder area. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Esther.
