Why does my flat-faced dog's face and ears smell like wet grass?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Brussels Griffon | Female | spayed | 7 years and 1 month old | 13 lbs

I have a 7 yr old Brussels Griffon with a very flat face. Her face and sometimes ears smell like wet grass. Is that normal?

Thank you for your question regarding Ruby. Brachycephelic (flat faced) dog can have skin folds around their face. It is easy for moisture and humidity to become trapped in the rolls which can start an infection. This can result in an odor. Try cleaning her face with some pet wipes. If the skin is very red or irritated, she will need to see her veterinarian for a prescription medication. You will also notice an odor of she has an ear infection or dental disease. Her veterinarian will be able to diagnose these conditions as well. I hope this information helps!
