I just moved into a new house and my dog is already barking at new people she sees in the house, she has done this in the last house too so it’s hard to bring new people around, what do I do?

I’ve had good success using a sonic egg. It’s a portable bark deterrent. You could use it only when needed. I would also give her a no bark command to reinforce what you want. You can also teach her to go to her place. A bed, cushion or spot on the couch. Give a treat when she’s relaxed and quiet in addition to praise. Training takes consistency, time and patience. You will need to do some training with her. First, teach her the watch me command so that you can teach her to direct her attention to you when needed. Once she has learned the command then you can start to use it when someone comes to the house. You can use the watch me command to get her attention and then make her sit and stay. With time, hopefully, she will learn some manners when people come to the house. It might also help to enroll her in puppy classes and have a trainer work with her. You should also have her spayed which may help decrease her unwanted territorial behavior. http://www.abetterdog4u.com/articles/teaching_watch_me.htm

Dibella is beautiful! Part of the answer depends on the situations when she is barking. If it is a situation when you are present, I would recommend calling her to you and asking her to sit or down or any other command while she is focusing on you. Obviously you can use treat rewards for this. The goal is to get her used to doing something else when she sees new people rather than bark at them. If you have friends that are comfortable with her, you can ask them to do the same thing. Have them give Dibella a command and reward her for doing what they ask, but not for barking. The goal is for her to associate getting treats with seeing people as long as she doesn't bark. Good luck! I hope that was helpful. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
