Hello, last night my dog’s paw was stepped on by my father (a tall man). now he is limping and will not put any weight on his leg. i’ve been able to stretch the leg out without him howling or whimpering, and also have been able to massage his paw and entire leg. could it be just sore? or something more serious? circled in the picture is the hurt paw

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Rocco! Yes it could just be sore soft tissue. I’d rest him for 1-2 days and see if there is improvement. But if there is no improvement he should see your Vet. He is young and if there is a fracture we want to know that sooner than later. He could have a fractured toe, a fractured bone in his wrist or a fracture a long the growth plate. I wish Rocco a speedy recovery!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Chip. If he is not bearing weight on the limb and is holding it up, that indicates that he is painful. It very well could be a muscular injury, but it is best to have it evaluated by his veterinarian. A broken bone is typically by swelling of the limb and bruising of the overlying skin. Keep him quiet and try your best to limit his movement (no running, jumping or doing stairs). If he begins using it more, then it is healing. If he continues to hold the limb up, he will need to see his veterinarian before next week. In the meantime, do not give him any over-the-counter pain medication as it can be toxic to dogs. I hope this information helps!
