My older dog accidentally mated. Should I spay or get an injection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Lhasa Apso | Female | unspayed | 5 years and 10 months old

My 5-6 year old Laso Apso tied with a 2 year old minitue Maltese for about 5 minutes on Saturday. I have been reading online that it if she is pregnant it could be quite bad for her to have a first litter at this age However I have also been reading about the misbreeding injection and how this can be quite dangerous with its side affects My dog is very healthy and doesn’t seem to look old However I was just looking for some advice as in would it be better to have an injection Or puppies

Honestly, your best option is to spay her now if you are not planning on ever breeding her. That way she will not have puppies and you don't have to use the mismating shot which does have a lot of side effects as you have researched. Keeping her intact (not spayed) is not good for her health in the long run if she is not a breeding dog. They have higher instances of pyometra (deadly uterine infection), mammary (breast) cancer and uterine/ovarian cancers among other issues. Here is an article about this.
