My dog ate a small paint chip hours ago, acting normal. Is she okay?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 1 year and 2 months old | 10.6 lbs

My dog ate what looked to be like a paint chip. It was only one not very big but that was hours ago I’d say between 2:30-3pm. It’s 10pm and she’s acted completely normal. Eats. Drinks. Same energy. Does this mean she’ll be okay?

It can take up to a couple of days to see problems from a foreign body if one was going to occur, but given that Snowball ate a very small paint chip, I doubt that will happen. I'd also expect to see some GI upset by now. It's great that she is eating, drinking, and behaving normally, and I wouldn't be too worried about her. In all likelihood, she will be just fine. While modern paints do not contain lead, chewing wood can still cause intestinal injury and even result in foreign bodies. Signs of this would include lethargy, vomiting, loss of appetite, and/or diarrhea. You should do your best to reprimand Louie if you see him chewing the wall or furniture, and can even try some Bitter Apple spray to deter the chewing. I hope this helps and that all is well!

I came home to my six month old puppy eating three or four paint brushes, she didn’t eat the bristles or the metal, just the wood. Will she be ok? What should I do?
She will likely be unaffected, particularly if she chewed the wood into small pieces first. If she swallowed a large piece there would be potential for stomach upset or gastrointestinal obstruction. I would monitor her and call your vet if she vomits, develops diarrhea or has a decrease in appetite.

This is unlikely to cause any serious problems - it sounds like the berries are small enough that they should pass through the intestines without getting stuck, even in a small dog like Dorothy. I doubt very much that the paint would have been lead-based, as this is known to be such a hazard now for both children and pets - most lead-based paint is found in old houses, and is very rarely used for anything else anymore. As long as she is acting normal, I wouldn't worry - the berries should pass through her GI tract and pass harmlessly in her poop within 2-3 days. If she has any symptoms like repeated episodes of vomiting, acting lethargic, or not eating, it would be a good idea to have her seen for a check-up to make sure everything is okay.

Given that Snowball has eaten twice since and isn't vomiting, I would monitor her for signs an obstruction to be safe. It can take a couple of days for signs to be seen which include vomiting, anorexia, diarrhea, not pooping, and severe lethargy. If you see any of those signs, take her into a vet right away. Otherwise if you don't see any of those signs, she will be just fine. Best of luck!

What should I do if my dog ate parts of a pen including some ink?
Hello, and thanks for your question about Willow. From your picture, it looks like she probably ingested very little if at all. She will most likely do just fine. Small pieces of plastic will typically pass without incident. If she's acting totally normal, you can monitor her for symptoms of GI upset (vomiting, decreased appetite, diarrhea, lethargy) - or to be on the safe side have her seen by your vet to get abdominal x-rays and make sure everything looks ok. Of course, if you're already seeing symptoms then send her in to be examined. But if she's acting fine, I suspect she'll be fine. :-) Hope this helps!

My dog chewed up and ate a part of a painted wooden piece of furniture. Is she going to be ok or do I need to take her to the vet? She seems to be acting ok, but it just happened about 10 minutes ago.
Oh no, that was naughty of Chloe! At this point, all you can do is monitor her. It wouldn't be recommended to induce her to vomit, as the wood could get caught in her esophagus or damage it on it's way out. The wood could cause some damage to her GI tract as it passes through and/or could cause an obstruction. Monitor her for vomiting, diarrhea, bloody feces, anorexia, blood in the vomit, lethargy, or constipation. Should you see any of those signs, I would take Chloe into a vet right away.

Hi, from your description if the events I also think your dog should be fine. However I would keep an eye on him over the next 8-12 hours, make sure he is eating, drinking and not having any different symptoms when breathing.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding your dog. As long as she did not eat any of the make up or the packaging, I suspect she will be fine. If she did consume either of the above, then I recommend monitoring her closely. If she develops vomiting or diarrhea, then I recommend that she sees a veterinarian. It is a good sign that she is acting normally now though. I hope this information helps!

If Jordy did eat the dry wall by biggest concern would be possible obstruction if he swallowed a big piece instead of chewing it. However, as you know dry wall really crumbles and I suspect you would see evidence on the floor or in/ around his mouth if he has been messing around with it. I would monitor him for any signs of nausea or Vomiting. On the other hand you could be very proactive and have him seen at an ER today and have them induce vomiting to see if he vomits anything out. This may be a bit overkill since we don’t even know if it was ingested, but it is certainly an option. Best of luck and I hope he does well. Thank you for using Pet Coach.
