My dog has pneumonia symptoms. What can I do before the vet?

My 8-year-old dog is sick (we think it is pneumonia) but we cannot get into the vet until Monday (2 days away). What can we do?

I'm sorry Abby is sick! If she sounds congested, you can try using a humidifier or bringing her into the bathroom with the door closed while you take a hot shower - the steam and humidity help to break up congestion and temporarily relieve symptoms associated with respiratory infections. Take her temperature rectally (a dog's normal temp is between 101.5-102.5F), and if it's above 103F, I would find an ER vet clinic or a vet on call to see her right away. Additionally, if she is having trouble breathing, I wouldn't wait until Monday and have her seen by a vet right away. Make sure she has access to plenty of fresh water and food. Rest her, taking her outside only to potty and then bring her right back in when she's done. Keep her in a quiet area of the house. If at any time you are concerned about her or her symptoms, again take her into an ER vet or find a vet on call to see her. I hope this helps!

As for the antibiotic, because you aren't sure if she ate it or not, I would wait for the next dose. Try hiding it in some peanut butter or boiled white meat chicken (no bones), and stay with her to make sure she swallows it and doesn't spit it up. You may have to put the pill in the back of her throat to ensure she swallows it. I will put a video below on how to do this. If she goes into respiratory distress, i.e. has trouble breathing, then I wouldn't wait until Monday to bring her back into the vet and I would rush her into an ER vet right away. Poor girl. The only thing you can do in the meantime is to try and unclog her airway. You can do so by using a humidifier or placing her in the bathroom with the hot shower running for 5-10 minutes once or twice a day. You can also use a pediatric syringe to help remove any mucous plugs. However, it sounds like her infection is quite severe, so I would look into taking her to another vet who can get her in sooner. Young puppies do have a tendency to develop pneumonia quickly after a prolonged upper respiratory infection that is left untreated, so its best to get her seen right away. If your pup is having a lot of trouble breathing and you are concerned he is in respiratory distress, then I would have him seen by a vet as soon as possible. It's always fine to have your dog checked out by a vet if you are very concerned. Otherwise, I'd wait the three days and see if he improves before taking him back into the vet. I hope he feels better soon!

She is very hot I think she has a fever and would like to know what we can give her and she has been coughing and sneezing a lot they gave us a liquid medicine for her but to me its seems like she is getting worse
A dogs normal body temp is 101-102.5 so they will feel warm to us normally. You can use a rectal thermometer if you want to assess her temperature. If you feel she is worsening despite medication I recommend a veterinary visit. Do not give any human fever reducers as they are toxic to dogs. If she had kennel cough or an upper respiratory infection it can occasionally progress to pneumonia so Augustine needs a recheck with a vet if she is not improving I hope Augustine feels better soon. It sounds like PD may have a respiratory infection. I would take her into the vet for an exam tomorrow. She may benefit from some antibiotics to help with the infection. Unfortunately, respiratory infections do typically require a visit to the vet for medications such as antibiotics, and I would recommend bringing her into one tomorrow. If paying for a vet is an issue, you can see if your vet accepts payment plans, if there is a low cost clinic in your area, or you can apply for Care Credit online. my dogs left nostril is secreting mucus i just noticed it, what should i do other than take her to a vet?
Thanks for using Boop by Petco! If you are waiting until your regular vet opens, you can try putting her in the bathroom with a hot shower on to use the steam in the room to help break up the mucus. I would keep her in there for about 15-20 minutes 3-4 times today. It sounds like Peanut may have an upper respiratory infection. Another possibility is an infected tooth. My dog was recently diagnosed with bronchial pneumonia. He was given a strong antibiotic. He has had 3 doses but still refuses to eat and his breathing is still very rapid and shallow. He just stands and pants constantly.
Bronchial pneumonia can be a very serious diagnosis. Sometimes pets that have been diagnosed with pneumonia need oxygen therapy for a few days until the antibiotics kick in. He seems to be very uncomfortable because of his difficulty breathing. My recommendation is to have him seen at a facility that can provide oxygen therapy. In the mean time, you might try taking him in a steamy bathroom and patting his chest firmly until you can make him cough. This may help break up some of the mucous, but the best thing for him is oxygen therapy and continued antibiotics. Best wishes!

It does sound like Lucy may have a cold. I would have her seen by a vet tomorrow, as she may need medications to help with her symptoms. my 19 year old is making odd chuffing/snorting sounds when she exhales, i think she may have pneumonia or a sever sinus infection. what can i do to help her?
Poor Kyla! If you think she may have a sinus infection or pneumonia, she really needs to see a vet right away, as these problems will require prescription antibiotics to treat. I would recommend taking her in for an exam as soon as possible. If you aren't able to take her tonight, you can try bringing her into the bathroom with you while you take a hot shower - the steam and humidity often help to break up nasal congestion and temporarily relieve symptoms. This may make her a bit more comfortable until you are able to see the vet.
