My dog has a slow-growing thigh lump. Is this bump serious or benign?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 9 years and 2 months old | 4.3 lbs

If she has a small ball like bump on her inner thigh that’s been there since June & has only grown a little & doesn’t bother her is it a good chance that it’s something benign? She had a needle aspiration & the vet couldn’t determine what it was but it was something of the same cell. She will get it removed the 18th for tests but I’m so scared I can’t even eat. Brusing in picture is from needle.

I wish I could give you some piece of mind. Unfortunately it's impossible to say from a picture if it's benign or not. The fact that it's been there for almost a year now and hasn't become much larger is a good sign, but doesn't make cancer impossible. You are definitely making a good decision to have it removed. I'd recommend talking to Precious' vet about your anxiety and see if she could be scheduled sooner for surgery. Maybe a cancellation will come up. I hope you get some good new soon and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

There is a great chance that this tumor is benign especially since the aspirate came back as the same cells. Most cancer cells come back as varying sizes. Since it hasn't grow any since June is also a good indication that it is likely benign. You are doing the best thing for Precious by having is surgically removed and test though to just make 100% sure it is benign. I hope this helps to ease your mind.
