My dogs ate a lot of glucosamine. Is it an emergency? Home remedies?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 11 years and 8 months old | 40 lbs

My 2 dogs got into a bottle of Glucosamine(for dogs) 500mg. The bottle was 90% full & is now 25%. Sammy weighs 20-22lbs & is 4yrs old & Millie weighs around 45lbs & is 11yrs old. Is there anything I can do here at home for them as I am short on funds for and ER visit for them? As of right now they seem to be themselves.

I do not recommend inducing vomiting since giving hydrogen peroxide can cause esophageal irritation. Glycosamine is very safe so they should be fine. I would monitor them closely. They may vomit on their own, have diarrhea or be fine with no issues. Dogs are natural scavengers so they often are fine eating things they shouldn't and in large quantities. If they start acting lethargic or ill then I would certainly take them in for an exam and treatment. They may give fluids or activated charcoal to absorb the glycosamine. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Sammy and Millie.
