Why is my senior dog throwing up yellow bile on an empty stomach?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 9 years and 6 months old | 40 lbs

My dog (mixed breed of basset poodle dachshund) has thrown up when she has an empty stomach. It's usually about 8-10 hours after eating. She is almost 10, and typically ate twice a day (morning and evening), but in the last day or so has thrown up seemingly bile.

Dogs generally vomit bile when they have an empty stomach. I recommend feeding small meals several times daily to reduce the vomiting. Or you can give a treat or two just before bed and first thing in the morning. Generally this is nothing to be overly concerned about. If she continues to vomit, doesn't feel well or starts losing weight then please take her in for and exam and bloodwork. Then if there is a problem they can start treatment right away if they find a medical issue. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Emma.
