Why is my rabbit losing weight and fur despite eating normally?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Rabbit | Male | unneutered | 2 lbs

I have a double maned lionhead rabbit and i had noticed a couple days ago that hes lost alot of weight, which is odd because he always has a supply of food in his feeder so he can eat and always has water, hes eating and drinking normally so it doesnt make any sense, hes skin and bones but moving around no problem, i just noticed a pea size mass on his eye lid, he also has lost alot of fur as well

It definitely sounds like something serious is going on with Bun Bun. If his appetite is still good and his stools are normal but he is losing weight I would be concerned with either intestinal parasites or cancer causing him to get a lack of nutrients. This would explain the hairloss as well. I would recommend taking Bun Bun to your veterinarian to be examined. Your vetnwill most likely want to run some blood work and possibly do X-rays as well. I hope this helps. Best of luck. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

I would recommend taking your rabbit to the veterinarian to be examined as soon as possible. A rabbit that is not eating is at risk for developing gastric stasis (where the GI tract shuts down) which can be life threatening. Your rabbit may need a feeding supplement, fluids and pain medications to get him back to normal. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Best of luck.
