Why is my pregnant dog whimpering all night? Is she in labor or pain?

I have a female dog that is pregnant. I have noticed of late that she is not barking, but is making a whimpering sound that is now annoying us as it makes us not sleep. Please assist.

There could be a couple of reasons why Spike is whimpering. It could be that she is in the first stage of labor. A dog's pregnancy typically lasts between 58-68 days, so if she is around that time, it could be possible she is starting labor. The first stage of labor can last up to 18 hours. Now if she has been whimpering for a couple of days and/or isn't around 58-68 days pregnant, this whimpering can be a sign of pain. She shouldn't be in pain unless she is going into labor, and in this case, I would recommend an immediate visit with the vet. Her health is extremely important so she can give birth safely to her puppies, and if there is any concern about her health, a vet visit should happen immediately. Given that I do not know how far along she is in her pregnancy, my advice is to take her into a vet now. Best of luck, and thank you for contacting Pet Coach!

If 18 hours pass and she has not progressed to the second stage of labor (contractions and giving birth), get her into a vet immediately. A dog pregnancy lasts between 58 and 68 days with an average of 63 days. If she is in that range, labor is a possibility. Lucy should be examined by your veterinarian or at the nearest veterinary ER to confirm pregnancy or to diagnose illness or injury. If she is an older dog, uterine infection (pyometra) is a possibility. There is nothing OTC that you can safely give her for relief.

Most dogs have a gestation period of about 60-63 days, so it could be that Charlotte is getting closer to labor and so is searching for a place to have her pups. Dogs can become restless before going into labor and may pace, have a change in temperature or even stop eating immediately prior to having their puppies. You may also see enlargement of the mammary glands and some "waxing" or secretion of a milky substance just prior as well. If she seems very uncomfortable, in pain, or is becoming listless/lethargic or has pale gums/tongue in addition to the pacing behavior, or is actively in labor and straining to produce a puppy for several hours without success, then it is best to get her into a vet for care as it may indicate a stuck puppy or other underlying issue that needs to be treated.

Average gestation is 63 to 65 days, however puppies can be full term and born anywhere between 58 and 68 days. So she will give birth within the next 10 to 14 days or so. The squeaking may be normal, as now the puppies are growing rapidly and it just may be a bit uncomfortable for her. She will start building a nest when she is close to giving birth. If you are worried about her and think that the squeaking may be a sign of her giving birth before day 58, or that she may be ill, take her to your vet for an exam to make sure everything is ok. Premature puppies have a hard time surviving.

Maria is very cute! Seeing a clear discharge is normal, and she could be crying out because she's in the first stage of labor. During this stage, the cervix begins to dilate and the uterine contractions start. This first stage of labor can last up to 18 hours, after which the dog begins actively pushing and gives birth to the puppies. If she is 66 days I would definitely recommend seeing a vet as soon as you can. It’s possible that she is in stage one of labor, but at 66 days she is past the average gestation length and it’s possible that she is having difficulty with labor or that there are problems with the puppies. A vet can check to see if she is in labor and can also determine whether or not the puppies might be in distress. If you start to see active contractions your should see a puppy within 30-69 minutes and she should not go more than 4 hours between puppies.

Hello, congratulations on your new coming puppies. Its possible that she is beginning to have signs of initiating the first part of labor. During this time, their temperature may decrease and they may shiver. Keep an eye for any evidence of active contractions. If you are seeing contractions without production of a puppy that lasts longer then 2 hours, then she should be evaluated by her veterinarian immediately. If she seems lethargy, weak, and is not interested in food or water then she should be evaluated sooner. If she does deliver her puppies on her own, you may assist in cleanig the puppies and drying them so that they may begin to nurse shortly after birth. Hope this helps and best of luck.

It sounds like Pixie could be in the first stage of labor, which can last up to 18 hours. Now if 18 hours have passed since you first starting seeing these signs, she needs to see a vet now. French bulldogs frequently need help giving birth in the form of a c-section, with over 80% of their litter being delivered this way. It's very important to take her into a vet if 18 hours have passed, as leaving her without veterinary treatment can and has lead to the death of the puppies and potentially the dog.
