My senior dog has blood in his chest and is anemic. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | 9 years and 9 months old | 99 lbs

My dog was lethargic with a high temp. Blood results showed low albumin and very anaemia. Urine was normal. He is now eating well with energy. Abdominal scan was normal but chest x Ray showed fluid in his chest. It was blood which wasn't able to be removed due to clotting. It is being sent for tests. No other information has been given to us and I would love an opinion. Thank you

Glad to hear Yogi is eating again but he definitely sounds like he has some serious issues going on that require attention. Blood in the chest cavity can be caused by a variety of conditions including trauma, rat poisoning, bodily coagulation disorders, cancers, and blood flow issues. If your vet has not already, Yogi should also have clotting times assessed. This will require another blood draw. With Yogi being an older dog and you not reporting any sort of trauma, the most likely causes of these symptoms would have to be either poisoning or a cancerous process. The test your vet has sent out should shed some light on this. Hope this answers your question.

I am so sorry to hear about Yogi. Yes, anemia and low albumin are very concerning problems. It indicates the the body is either losing protein or the liver can not create it anymore. Additional liver test such as bile acids as well as An abdominal ultrasound may be recommended to help determine the diagnosis. Best of luck and I hope you find an answer soon.
