My dog ate popcorn. Is her throat irritated or is something stuck?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Cockapoo | Female | spayed | 2 years and 9 months old | 25 lbs

Earlier this evening my 2 year old cockapoo ate the smallest piece of popcorn that had fallen on the floor. Almost immediately after she tatted swallowing intensely and licking her lips which she has stopped doing (only less frequently). She has a moment occasionally where she sit up and loudly swallow multiple times only to the settle down once again. Would this be something to do with the popcorn being lodged or just an irritated throat? She has been eating and drinking fine since.

It could have been that the piece of popcorn irritated Millie's throat as you suspect. Given that she is eating and drinking normally, that would lead me to believe there isn't something lodged in her throat. If there was something lodged in her throat, she would not be able eat or drink normally, she would be regurgitating her food and water. It could also be that the popcorn upset her stomach, as it won't be something she normally eats and her GI system won't be used to it. Because she is eating and drinking normally, I wouldn't be too concerned about her, and hopefully the behavior you are seeing will be gone by tomorrow. I hope this helps, best of luck!
