My dog's third eyelid shows, he can't blink. Could it be paralysis?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Male | neutered | 6 years and 3 months old | 65 lbs

My dog got bit by something or ate something outside that caused excessive saliva for several days. After he stopped blinking. His “3rd eyelid” is visible when he blinks. My vet has checked his ears, eyes, has him on antibiotics...it’s been about a month. Any idea what I can do to heal him? Bilateral paralysis is what my vet thinks it is. He acts normal. I can’t afford 2300.00 for an MRI. Please help.

I am unsure from your question quite how far he has recovered - is he still unable to blink, or does he blink and have protruding third eyelids? If he has a functional blink, and hie eyes are making sufficient tears to protect the eye (your vet can perform a simple procedure to check this) then continued monitoring would be a reasonable option to see how things improve over 3-6months
