Why is my dog's head shaking rapidly? Should I be concerned?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | French Bulldog | Male | neutered | 2 years old | 25 lbs

Dodger recently had inflammation in the discs in his spine and received surgery for it. Before the surgery even happened we noticed his head would rapidly shake from left to right. It lasts about a minute or two. What is this? Should we be concerned? It doesn’t happen a lot, but it does happen and it worries us. We did mention it to the neurologist, but he did not say much on it.

Unfortunately, that's hard to say what the cause is without being able to conduct a neurological exam. It could be indicative a permanent nerve damage, pain in the neck or a congenital condition. I recommend to record the behavior on video and then ask the neurologist to view the video. The neurologist is the best person to accurately answer your questions about Dodger. I'm glad he's doing well and please feel free to post any additional questions.
