My hamster gets tired quickly and lays flat. Is it his lungs?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Hamster | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 4 months old | 0.134 lbs

When I take him out of his cage and let him explore a very small portion of the room he would go back into his cage after running around for tops 90 seconds and lay flat on his tummy over his cooling stone, almost as if he is overheating but it is not hot here in Syracuse. He had never done this before and has been doing it now for three months.Even when he comes out for 30 sec without running much, he will still lay flat. He used to love running around my room. He has a history of lung problems

Thanks for reaching out about Keystone. Wonder if he is having some continued respiratory problems such as exercise intolerance due to lung fibrosis, continued infection or heart disease. A veterinary visit is recommended to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. Good luck.
