My old hamster is sick: weight loss, clicking, wobbly. Is it old age?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Hamster | Male | 0 lbs

My sons hamster is about two and in the past three days he has lost half his body weight, is making a clicking sound but I’m not sure if it’s breathing or not that’s doing it and has a wobbly walk and severely hunched back. I don’t believe it’s wet tail as I haven’t noticed anything about his bottom or his cage indicating that. Is this just what happens at end of life for hamsters or treatable? Thank you

Two years old is considered "old age" for a hamster. These may be age related changes, but you would need to have him physically examined by your veterinarian to diagnose and treat any infection or injury. The clicking while breathing is concerning as it could be a respiratory infection.
