My cat's nail is peeling. What signs mean I should see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 5 years and 9 months old | 9 lbs

I think my cat injured his thumb (?) when I went to check his nails out before trimming I noticed a piece was coming off of the side. At what point should I start to worry in a case like this?

Sometimes the outter cuticles will shred due to injury, infection or a diet not high enough in fatty acids. I recommend to start Bruce on an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for cats and change his diet to Nutro or Royal Canin. Monitor the nail daily for any signs of reddness around the base of the nail, swelling of the toe, additional injury to the nail or excessive licking of the area. If these signs are seen, have him examined by the veterinarian. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.
