Horse stocking up from hay? Can bute help and how to prevent it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Farm Animal | Horse | Female | 14 years and 9 months old

My horse got some hoary allysium in her hay and it caused her to have severe stocking up in her legs to the point I was worried she would founder. We live rurally and it can be hard to get a vet here. If this happens again i am wondering what can I give her to help her- would bute work? I also would like advice for preventing this from happening again...? I am not in a position to get rid of all my hay that we are saving for winter! Thanks for your time :)

Hello. The only way to avoid the problem is to avoid the hay. I would definitely make sure you can get & keep some bute on your farm, & the first signs of stocking up, start the bute. If you can familiarize yourself with how the weed looks in the hay, you can pick through it to remove as much as you can. Good luck & thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
