Why is my senior Rottweiler straining to poop with chronic diarrhea?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Rottweiler | Female | spayed | 6 years and 9 months old | 100 lbs

I am having problems with my 7 year old Rotty. Since March 2019, she strains to go to the bathroom, has poop that hangs from her anus as she paces, dropping small pieces then has an explosive diarrhea-ish movement. We have tried a huge list of meds. Vet thinks 2 spots on spine and hip dysplaysia keeps her from pushing. Currently trying carprofen 125mg but nothing has changed. She has sensitivity to NSAIDS that cause her to bleed.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Bellamie. If the pain medications are not helping her situation, then I worry about a primary gastrointestinal tract disease. I recommend a full blood panel. Values such as cholesterol and albumin can be affected by chronic gastrointestinal disease. I would also do a GI specific blood panel that measures cobalamin, folate, TLI and PLI levels. These are vitamins involved in digestion and pancreatic values. From there, an abdominal ultrasound by a veterinary radiologist may be needed. A prescription diet trial could be beneficial as well. I hope this information helps!
