My senior dog pees inside. Is he in pain? What are my options?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labradoodle | Male | neutered | 13 years and 8 months old | 105 lbs

My dog is almost 14 years old. For a couple months now, he hasn’t been able to keep himself from going potty in the house. I know we could get a bunch of tests done on him, but we don’t have the funds as of now. Do you think he’s in pain? Should we possibly consider euthanasia? Should we just get him a diaper & call it a day? Thank you.

There are many possible reasons for incontinence and a basic physical exam can be useful to check for arthritic changes which may be contributing and treatable. If no obvious reason is found euthanasia may be worth considering as invasive tests and work up although providing diagnosis may not uncover treatable causes and quality of life can quickly slide in such patients
