Help! My cat stops eating when stressed by moving. What can I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 2 years and 3 months old | 11 lbs

Hello, I’m moving tomorrow and I’m worried about Kovu. Anytime something in his life changes he stops eating. It’s a behavioral problem. When he was almost 1 he went from 10 lbs to 5 lbs because I moved, and when he was neutered in April he didn’t eat for several days and lost about 4 lbs again. (The vet was considering a feeding tube). He’s 11-12 lbs now, is there anything I can do to try to prevent this? I have a feliway diffuser but don’t know if that will be enough. Blood tests always normal

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. You can try a product called Quiet Moments Calm Chews with Melatonin for cats and see if this helps with any anxiety. If this does not work, then you could always speak with the veterinarian about an anti-anxiety medication short term. You can also buy Feliway spray and spray the carrier Kovu will be in to see if this also helps. I hope the move isn't too stressful for you or Kovu! Please let me know if you have any other questions / concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further.
