My dog's dew claw has a red, bleeding lump. Should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | unspayed | 2 years and 11 months old | 80 lbs

Just noticed my dogs left dew claw has a pea sized lump on this, it is red and appears she has nibbled the hair off around the lump area. It appears that it has been bleeding but unknown if this is due to her nibbling. She is constantly licking the area but she doesnt appear to be in any pain when I touch this. Just need advice on what it could be and whether to take vets or if could treat at home.

Hi and thanks for posting. From the picture, it looks like the declaw is bent back a bit and there appears to be a lot of redness and swelling around the base of the declaw. I do see a raised portion of the skin around the declaw. It does appear infected. I would recommend Mia see a veterinarian for this as soon as possible. If the declaw is broken, it may need to be clipped back so it can grow back normally and Mia may need to get on antibiotics for this as well. I hope this helps!
