My rat's finger is red and black. Is it broken? When should I see a vet?

Pet's info: Small Animal | Rat | Male | unneutered | 5 months and 27 days old

About 4 days ago I noticed that my rats finger was very red and had a black patch/ring around his finger. We put some antibiotics on it but the next day it looked worst. He is holding it up but he is walking on it. He has also been very mean lately with biteing and ECT. I thought it got pinched in the door but we have a dog also and she some times sneaks in the room and jumps and bites at the cage. The rats like to play and bite back. I would like to know what to do. Thanks!

That digit appears to be broken. The best option is to have your vet look at it. If the bone inside the toe is broken it may never heal and it may get infected. Rats don't tolerate topical medication well as they will usually lick it off as soon as you apply it. You can use this wound spray gel if you'd like as if he does ingest it, it is not toxic. I am very concerned this will not heal up without veterinary intervention.
