What to do when my dog has hiccups and refuses to drink water?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Male | neutered | 4 years and 9 months old | 8 lbs

My adult Yorkie has the hiccups. It started late last night. It seems to go away for about an hour but it comes back . I tried to give him water but he won’t drink it for some reason. What can I do to make it stop

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. Hiccups will not typically cause any problems. I would try and exercise him and get him to go for a long walk or run / chase after a toy for a bit to see if this helps the hiccups go away. Offer water and maybe add a small amount of chicken broth to the water to entice him. Hopefully this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions / concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further.
