Pet's info: Small Animal | Rat | Male | unneutered | 5 months and 26 days old
I have four pet rats, about 7 months old. I've noticed recently that their pee is smelling EXTREMELY strong, not at all their usual cage smell. We've been having to change their bedding every day because the smell is burn your nose strong as if we've been letting it sit for days. We haven't changed their bedding type (we use recycled paper bedding). We recently changed their diet, though, as recommended by our usual vet. They are on oxbow rat pellets and weekly fruits & veggies. Help??

Thanks for reaching out about your rats. Sexual maturity and the present of testosterone will present a stronger urine. Urinary tract infections will also result in similar smells but would be uncommon in multiple animals at the same time. Can you separate the animals and determine who's urine is odorous? Castration can lower the smell. Good luck.
