My dog is sick from heartworm medicine. Are these side effects normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Saint Bernard | Male | unneutered | 10 months and 26 days old | 100 lbs

Cooper has not eaten in 4 days. He is vomiting, very lethargic and just not himself. He had shots last week and was tested positive for Lyme. Taking doxycycline for that. He was also given Milbeguard heartworm preventative. The side effects from the heartworm medication is spot on with what is going on with him. We contacted our vet office and they said it sounds normal. I am just curious how long these adverse side effects are going to last? If that is the cause of it.

No, that does not sound normal. At regular/normal dosing Milbemycin is pretty safe and side effects are pretty rare. What you are describing does not sound spot on with side effects for this drug. Side effects are usually neurological. I suggest you get a second opinion from another vet.
