Will a male cockatiel nearby make my female lay more eggs?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Cockatiel | Female | unspayed

I want to get my cockatiel a friend (they'd be caged separately, may get out of cage time together). She's been egg bound before and came to me chronically laying so I REALLY don't want another female. I've had enough egg experiences lol. I'm wondering if having a male nearby would make her more likely to lay, even if they're not in the same cage? Is there any way I can bring a male 'tiel into the home without putting her at risk? Thanks.

Thanks for reaching out about Gacy. Having a male in the vicinity, vocal, can stimulate the female to lay eggs, so will be a risk. Check and correct diet, manipulation of photoperiod and hormone therapy can help females to stop laying eggs. Also, is possible to spay birds but is more risky than spaying a dog or a cat. Good luck.
