How to transition an outdoor cat to indoor living without depression?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Longhair | Male | neutered | 4 years and 1 month old | 16 lbs

I will be soon moving house where technically cats aren't allowed. The cat I am asking about, I've had since he was 2 wks old. He has always on and off had supervised outside time. He has always had a strong desire to go outside to where anytime the door is open he tries to run out. At the new house he will not be able to go outside whatsoever, which bring me to my question. Will this effect him in a negative way mentally? I don't want him to be depressed. I'm feeling very bad and anxious.

Yes, it will probably negatively affect him. If you do end up moving there I suggest you use some Feliway diffusers and do some environmental enrichment for him to keep him from getting bored.
